Kubu had never liked the noisy alarms. They hurt his ears. Still, it was never a good idea to ignore them.

Much as he liked helping when there were Big Problems, Kubu realized that when ships were fighting, he was more in the way than helpful. As everyone else snacking in the rec room scattered, Kubu did the helpfulest thing he could think of: he went to make sure Harmony was OK.

Esper wasn’t here. Mommy was always busy when Big Problems came around. Tiffany didn’t need his protection. Mr. Wesley was probably the biggest handler of Big Problems Kubu knew.

Racing through the corridors of the Errand of Mercy, he dodged all the new people Mommy had brought aboard rushing the other direction. Most he managed to avoid. Others he careened off with hastily shouted apologies.

Blinky light.

Honking horns.

Harmony must be so scared.

He found Karen and Harmony’s quarters and pushed the door alarm. “It’s me!”

While he was aware that his claim was far from specific, he also knew that no one else on board sounded megalodoggish.

The door slid open in an instant. Karen stood at the controls as Harmony rushed beneath her outstretched arm to wrap Kubu in an enthusiastic hug. “KUBU! We’re playing the best game! The couch is a rowboat, and we’re following the world’s loudest duckie!”

So much for being scared.

Once he’d made his way inside, Kubu asked Karen quietly, “Is everything all right?”

Karen shrugged. After all, he supposed, how right could things be with the emergency sirens blaring.

The ship shook. Just a little. Kubu knew that meant blasty ship fights.

Then, Kubu felt the whoosh of the ship going to a new astral depth. Everything wobbled in his tummy, and his head felt tight around his brain. Outside Karen’s window, the sky got super-duper dark, swirly and pasty like black finger paint and with no sign of stars. The lights went out. The duck stopped quacking.

Harmony held up a hand as a visor above her eyes. “We’ve lost him. Everyone be on the lookout for a brown duck as big as a hundred little ducks.” She studied the imaginary horizon.

When the lights came back on, the sound resumed.

“Ahoy! Thar she quacks! More rowing, everyone!” Harmony followed her own order and made rowing motions.

Another chime sounded from the door. When Karen answered, Saliza swept inside. “Are you guys all right?”

“Yes,” Karen replied. “We’re just playing rowboat with the giant duck.”

“The giant…?” Saliza trailed off with a knowing nod. She pantomimed a duck’s bill with her hand and puppeted the mouth moving in time with the klaxon. Karen nodded. “Far be it from me to pass up a flotilla. Have we got spare paddles?” She sat cross-legged on the couch and accepted an invisible paddle from Harmony.

The ship shook harder this time.

The door chimed. Kubu got to it before Karen was asked to give up her position on the rowboat.

Wendy Wesley was there in sneakers and her blouse untucked. She smelled VERY much like Mr. Wesley right then. “Good. You’re all here. Stay put.
